Welcome to The Coffee Bar at the Halifax Citadel!
Tucked within the iconic walls of the Halifax Citadel, "The Coffee Bar" is more than just a cozy stop for your favourite brew — it's a nod to the past. In the mid-1800s, British Army reforms brought about many improvements to soldiers’ daily lives, including the introduction of “dry” canteens, known as coffee bars. These early coffee shops were paired with soldiers' libraries, offering troops a quiet place to enjoy tea or hot chocolate with a good book. This simple pairing supported the Victorian-era belief in literacy and education as tools for personal and societal betterment.
Today, we honour that legacy by offering a warm, welcoming space where visitors can take a break and savour quality food and drinks — no marching orders required!
